F. Benedict\r\nIn the year between the St. Paul and the Little Rock conventions, the American added a restriction to the awarding of their Best of Breed and Best Opposite Sex trophies. It reads “All rabbits that are eligible to register must be registered at time of award.”\r\nThis requirement may, justifiably, be interpreted in two ways, for, according to the dictionary, the word “award” has two quite differant meanings. It may be defined as 1 - judgement, 2 - prize. “At time of award” could therefore mean either the time at which the rabbit was judged Best of Breet or Best Opposite Sex, or the time at which the prize was given.\r\nIn the interval between the judging and the actual going out of the trophies, a number of breeders had their prize wining rabbits registered, believing that was the intention of the ruling.\r\nIf we ask ourselves why the Amer-can imposed this restriction, the first answer that comes to mind is to increase the number of registrations. If a breeder could wait until his rabbit had won, the increased number of registrations would be negligible. If, however, a rabbit had to be registered before it was judged, many hopeful breeders would have not only one, but probably a number of their best animals registered before they went on the table.\r\nIn order to avoid confusion, this ruling should be clarified. STAHL\r\nARBA PASSING THE HALF CENTURY MARK ARBA\r\nThis was written on January 10, 1960 just 50 years from the date when a small group of people interested in rabbit raising met at the home of the Gibson Brothers in Detroit, Michigan and organized “The National Pet Stock Association”, now known as “The American Rabbit Breeders Association”.\r\nAs we enter into this, our Golden Anniversary Year, we salute the early pioneers and those who followed, who so admirably and with patience built what most of us, in fact all of us should consider an industry.\r\nIt is heartening indeed to see the splendid response from many of our members expressing their pleasure for services rendered. Expressions of appreciation for the “Golden Anniversary Guide Book”, and the recent Year Book. We hope that this bulletin, the first of three to be published during 1960 and again the Year Book to follow will meet with the approval of our old and new members alike.\r\nNow let us look forward to a second half century of progress, Especially to the months just ahead. In an organization of this nature members are most important. If we concentrate on getting members as we should there is no good reason why we cannot make gains in this respect during 1960 as we have done for several years.\r\nIt has been suggested numerous times, that, “If each member would get only one member, our membership would double”, this of course is not\r\npossible and should not be expected. A more practical suggestion would be that if, “All Officers, All members of committees, All State Representatives etc.” would get but one member there would be a very substantial increase in membership.\r\nThere is an old saying, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link”, and apparently there are many weak links within the ARBA chain which should be made stronger. Our State Representatives, most of them, if not all, are anxious and willing to serve, those who do use their own ideas, by doing so show their determination and resourcefulness.\r\nSpeaking of resolutions, some expressed their disappointment at Syracuse because there were no resolutions presented. Others felt that things were going so well that all were satisfied. The fact that there were differences of opinions would indicate the necessity of resolutions, there is always room for improvements ;\r\nIt has taken 50 years to bring the ARBA to a point where it can make faster progress in the future. In addition to our State Representatives we have our Local Clubs, State and Specialty Clubs, Committees and most important, our members. All working in unison can achieve that which we al hope for, to the members may we say, inspired by your loyalty and help we look to 1960 and the years to follow with renewed hope that all is well.\r\nA Special Announcement\r\nNow that the work in The American Rabbit Breeders Association is getting to be more than one or two of the Officers can handle and do a good job, and now that we have one of the members in the position of Vice President, I am going to divide up the important work with him. After this date, Mr. Edward H. Stahl, Vice President, will have the supervision of the State Representatives. This had been one department of our association that has not had the proper attention due to the fact that both your President and Secretary has had too much on their hands.\r\nIt has been said that one man can’t run the ARBA. I tried to take the jobs that would take lots of letter writing and the jobs that would require lots of visiting, because I have the time on my hands, that is I thought I had that much time, but I find that it is too much to do the kind of job that I always want, so now that we have the able assistance of Mr. Stahl, and he states that he will have the time to handle the State Representatives, I am turning it over to him. Youth Rabbit Club was a reality, again at this writing I am proud to inform you that this part of our organization is making great headway.\r\nNow I have another agreeable and happy lot of information for you — information that I know will please every member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association regardless of which side you are on either Fancy or Commercial—and here it is — The American Rabbit Breeders Association, in 1958, organized the American Commercial Rabbit Department. This Department is to operate by the rules set out in the A. R. B. A. constitution and by-law. Mr. Tommy Andrew, ARBA Director, has been appointed Chairman of this new Commercial Department by the ARBA Board of Directors, and with him are twelve of our outstanding members—on the Commercial Committee— who are working very hard to make a success. This entire committee is now working on and formulating plans for the working of this Department that will be of value to every Rabbit Breeder in this country.\r\nLet it be emphasized that the past few years have afforded us many delightful and enriching experiences. The different assignments have given us the opportunity to learn some things about the aims and purpose of what we need to do in our Great Interprise that will be profitable to all our members. Now that we have at last the Commercial Department working, and with the promising outlook of a greater opportunity for all our members, I feel sure that we will all be agreeable surprised at the benefits we will receive from this part of our organization. The ARBA Officers and the entire Commercial Committee is very much concerned with the possibilities of this new department of A. R. B. A. and what they can afford our members. In order to preceed intelligently it appears that we might first define some of the economy and then characterize the major projects that will be untilized to bring Greater Opportunities for those interested in the Commercial side of our business.\r\n1.\tAn economy controlled by the action of Rabbit Breeders who have had years of experience in the Commercial field.\r\n2.\tMaterial Resources developed by experienced and well trained Rabbit Breeders.\r\n3.\tThe Freedom of all Rabbit Breeders to benefit by our Commercial Department with Servitude of none.\r\n4.\tTo create markets for Domestic Rabbit Meat, Furs and all By-products made from Rabbits.\r\n5.\tTo disseminate information to our Members regarding raising Rabbits for Commercial purposes, housing, feeding and the selection of the proper kind of Rabbits for Commercial breeding. To show and demonstrate the proper methods in processing, packaging, freezing and marketing.\r\nThese concepts will make possible a better Rabbit business for the Breeders of this Country. In accordance with the provisions of this Department the A. R. B. A. Commercial Committee has laid the foundation upon which to build the Commercial Department and an economy which we will come to know as the American Way. This American Way Commercial Department will become commonplace in all our thinking. We are prone now to accept it as a permanent part of the Rabbit business. It is significant and should be recognized that the American Way is an ideal to be be pursued. Every achievement towards its goal makes us nearer out point of perfection—throws off another shackle—reveals another evidence of what A. R. B. A. can do for its membership.\r\nA Commercial Department has been part of our By-Laws for some years but it has not made much headway of being advanced until now. This is your business and mine and now that we have a hard working committee who are willing to and going to make a success in their undertaking it will behove all of us to put our shoulder to the wheel and help make this Department one of the best in A. R. B. A. Director Tommy Andrew and his hard working committee have been very busy writing up additional rules and regulations, acceptable to the ARBA Board of Directors, that will govern this part of A. R. B. OFFICIAL BULLETIN\r\nJANUARY-MARCH, 1960\r\nCOMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT REPORT\r\nBy Tommy Andrew, Chairman, 74 Terrace Drive, Shaveriown, Pa.\r\nWe find the newly formed American Commercial Rabbit Department moving along in fine shape at this reporting. Sales are reported tending to be more brisk as a result of the many supplies the A.C.R.D. is making available to its membership. Renewals coming in indicate that this Dept, is just what the membership wanted.\r\nMany fine projects have been accomplished as a result of this department or at its instigation. The Educational Research Dept, has issued several fine reports from the nucleus we have made available.\r\nRecently a large pathologist in the mid-west contacted us for a possible source of supply for in-bred rabbits. This would require the off spring of 22 brother-sister matings, or 8 parent offspring matings to produce a homogeneous strain of animals. This inquirer was willing to pay as high as five dollars and more per animal for stock to meet his requirement. It was quite a task to obtain a source for said supplier. Most breeders are unable to maintain a strain much past 13 or 14 brother-sister matings.\r\nContracts are all made for a display booth for the commercial demonstrations at the Fort Worth National Convention. Many features that have proved popular in the past shows plus many new features are being planned. These educational demonstrations cover all phases of the rabbit industry and are an ideal manner in which to exchange many ideas as well as to help bring uniformity in presenting our wares.\r\nA tremendous amount of correspondence takes place in this office. At times it seems we never shall get caught up. Therefore, we trust you, the members, will be patient with us. We will answer every bit of correspondence if you are patient. Then every once in awhile a bit of sunshine comes along in the form of someone who realizes the amount of work involved in getting a commercial program started and it all seems worthwhile once again. We do vainly wish that everyone would look at it in the light of those who write offering to do what they can rather than what are you going to do for me.\r\nYour A.C.R.D. boasts of over 450 members and the renewals are over the 70 mark. A year ago there were some who said this is another department that would not last. Now, they are getting on the bandwagon. We still need many many more and the only regret we have is that more of the Judges and Registrars are not members of the A.C.R.D. The Judges are the last to turn down a fee for judging the rabbits as commercial rabbits therefore they should be the first to get in the Department to promote them commercially.\r\nSome of the promotions your A.C. R.D. planned at the last convention are now in the hands of the printers and others who are to make them up. We have a sheet listing many of the supplies and services we furnish to members that is yours for the asking. These items are for the members of the A.C.R.D. in that they are helping to foot the bill. A roster of our membership, up to the Convention, is free for the asking to our members also, if they send along a stamp to help pay for the postage.\r\nThe American Commercial Rabbit Department has made a policy never to let a member down in finding the answer to a problem, if an answer is to be had.\r\nThe A.C.R.D. is supporting the American Rabbit Fryer Production Contest being held at Fontana, California this month. Through the efforts of this parent body, with assistance of the local and state organizations, the Specialty Clubs, and individual breeders, our many plans and goals will materialize. Indeed, much of our progress and accomplishments depends on YOU, the individual, interested in the results and happiness you will obtain in working with young people, and the many things you can do for them.\r\nFor this National Youth Club to prosper and gain many new members it is first necessary for interests to be created in the various local areas. With the cooperation of the National ARBA Club and the local rabbit clubs many things can be accomplished. To gain and preserve interest in your locality, it is necessary that your youth breeders be organized into a local Youth Club. Through this channel, the Youth Leaders will be in a position to work with a large number of youngsters. It will give the members the opportunity to participate with other Youth in a competitive and business like manner, in club work, in the shows etc. The chance to engage in competition and in “taking part” in club affairs will maintain interest. With the local members being members of the ARBA Youth Rabbit Club will have many privileges and benefits for their advantage.\r\nThe Leader of the Local Youth Club is in reality the promoter and organizer. This person should definitely be an ARBA member because of the impor-\r\ncommend a regular established feeding and breeding program and impress the importance of carrying this out.\r\nIt is a must that members keep an accurate set of records. This to include production of individual breeders, with use of hutch cards, records of rabbits sold (including those used for home use) and an account of all purchases etc.\r\nBenefits to Members\r\nMembers of the ARBA Youth Rabbit Club may register their rabbits in the American Rabbit Breeders Association for the regular $2.00 fee. The registrar doing this registration shall place the Youths membership number on the form in the place designated for ARBA number.\r\nThe ARBA Youth Rabbit Club has made provision for regular show sanctions for Youth or Junior shows. The winners of Best of Breed in the six breeds with the largest entry are a-warded the Special ARBA ribbons. The sanction also provides for Junior Grand Champion legs. These are issued to the Youth show on the same basis and rules as the regular ARBA adult show. The Junior Grand Champion legs are issued to all Youths showing in a sanctioned Youth show, however, only members of this club are awarded the Special ARBA ribbons.\r\nMembers are provided with the ARBA Youth Rabbit Club Guide book, which includes many helpful hints for beginners, the constitution and bylaws, and other information. Quarterly news reports are to be sent to members beginning Aug. 1, 1958. These bulletins will be sent to Youth members, free.\r\nMany very fine special premiums are being prepared for the Youth part of the ARBA convention to be held in October. The special premiums placed by the Youth Committee will be for members of the Youth Club only. In addition to this, there will be the very popular Junior Judging contest, the Youth club meeting, the Club will have a booth, and many other attractions.\r\nAs time and opportunity permits many, many new projects will be added that will create more opportunity and interest in this club. Palominos, NZR\r\nBIOGRAPHY\r\nHarry Hurlburt\r\nHARRY HURLBURT Harry as his many friends call him first became interested in rabbit raising in 1914 and as the came with many who started raising rabbits in the early days his first rabbits were Belgian Hares raised on shares and suppled by Frank Hackett, Gilbertsville, N.Y. From a small beginning his hear multiplied as rabbits will and were disposed of during the lator part of World War I when he entered the service of the U. S. Navy.\r\nHarry again took up rabbit raising after his discharge from the service, in Las Animas Colo, in 1922, lator moving to Fowler, Colo, where he formed a partnership with Stanley Larkin, carrying on the business as Larkin & Hurlburt Fur Farm, at that time one of the largest rabbitries in the west. Their herd consisted of New Zealand Whites and Reds, Standard Chinchillas, White Flemish Giants, White Beverens and Black Dutch. This business was carried on until the ’30s when Harry East and formed the Hurlburt’s Rabbitry and originated the Empire Strain of New Zealand Whites, a strain that had made quite a name for themselves in the show rooms all over America.\r\nHe joined the American Rabbit Breeders Association while in Las Animas, Colo, in 1925 and has been its booster and supporter ever since.\r\nRabbits and other small animals has been his main interest for years, one of the few whose livelihood and support depended on this enterprise; Is an ARBA Judge and Registrar; having Judged shows all over America; is one of the few Eastern Judges selected to judge at the great Los Angeles county Fair show; for years the largest rabbit show in point of entries with the exception of convention shows.\r\nHarry Hurlburt is a former director of the ARBA and at the recent convention at Syracuse was honored with the presentation of a plague and scroll by his many friends in recognition of his contribution and outstanding work in behalf of the rabbit industry.\r\nHarry has had his ups and downs, has taken them in stride and says, “during these years I have made many fine friends in the rabbit industry. Conn, reports receiving an urgent request for rabbits from a farmer in Honduras who raises 1000 heads of lettuce with the aid of a U S. agricultural agent. Bob at 79 (now retired) is still active in the Marion County Rabbit Breeders Association (Indiana) a number of National Specialty Clubs, but his annual vacation is at the ARBA  Convention which he and his good wife have not missed for a number of years.\r\nOn a number of accasions we have heard our younger say, — Who is that nice old couple over there? Why thats Bob Shoptaw and his wife this would not be a real convention if these real “old timers” were not here.\r\nBob has been a member of the ARBA for over 25 years, in fact he was a member of the National Pet Stock Association now the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Although he has been a faithful booster and breeder of New Zealands both reds and whites he is also interested in Californians, his first New Zealand Red was reigstered in 1921 with the American Federation of New Zealand Rabbit Breeders who at that time had their own registeration system. Bob has been a judge since 1941 and is very proud of the fact that his application was signed by James Blyth, John Fehr and Vern Ashton. He is especially proud of a letter dated February 9, 1940 signed by A. Weygandt, Secretary, Quote\r\n“Dear Mr. Shoptaw:\r\nPresident Fehr advises me he has appointed you as organizer and State Representative for the A.R. & C. B. A. if I can help you in any way, do not fail to call on me at any time for we need more men like you to biuld up the American.”\r\nA. Weygandt, Sec’y\r\nBob had a nice little house in the rear of his home which he has turned into a Club Room and meeting plate of the Marion County Rabbit Breeders Ass’n this is really something to behold. He has newspapers, magazines and clippings and pictures all over the walls, dating back 25 and 35 years. It will pay any rabbit breeder driving through Indianapolis to stop off and drop in on Bob.\r\n(Ed. It is a simple matter to present a resolution. Set forth your idea on a large piece of paper and then ask your fellow members of the A.R. B.A. to sign it. It will require 25 signers. Foreward the signed resolution to the chairman of the resolutions committee. Your resolution must reach the chairman not later than July 1st 1960. The resolutions must appear in print 60 days prior to the convention; this means they will this year be in the August issue of the A.R.B.A. Bulletin. Hess, Chairman\r\nConferred with an official of the Federal Trade Commission regarding proposed advertising material of a rabbit breeder.\r\nSeveral contacts have been made with persons in the U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding their work in Washington relating to rabbits. The decrease in members on the advertising plan can be attributed to the increase in the cost of membership, the considerable drop in members secured on the membership drive is mostly because that only new members were credited to this drive during 1959 as compared with credits being given in 1958 on all members secured new and renewals. We still do not have the information regarding the winners of the Most Registered Rabbits, and the Second Most Registered Rabbits.
